New Tax Deduction for Investors (Effective July 2023)
In July 2023, Mauritius introduced an added incentive for local companies investing in approved film projects under the rebate scheme—a 200% tax deduction. To qualify, at least 90% of the project must be produced in Mauritius, encouraging further local investment in the film industry.
Eligible Productions and Rebate Rates
Up to 40% Rebate:
Feature Films (minimum QPE of USD 1M)
High-End TV Drama Series or Single Dramas (minimum QPE of USD 150K per episode)
Post-Production (minimum QPE of USD 150K)
Up to 30% Rebate:
Other feature films, TV dramas, documentaries, music videos, and dubbing projects with varying minimum QPE requirements
Qualified Production Expenditures (QPE)
The rebate scheme covers a range of production-related expenses, including:
- Travel and Shipping costs to and from Mauritius
- Accommodation
- Rental of Local Film Equipment
- Professional Services (e.g., insurance, accounting, auditing)
- Production Service Company Fees
- National and International Cast and Crew Costs
- Catering, Props, Sets, and Wardrobe costs incurred in Mauritius
Application Process
Producers interested in the Mauritius Film Rebate Scheme must submit their applications to the Economic Development Board (EDB) a minimum of four weeks before filming begins. Required documentation includes a project synopsis, budget, financial plan, and other relevant materials.
